CASSOPOLIS — The Cass County Prosecutor’s Office is in the process of determining whether or not to file charges regarding a case of alleged embezzlement out of Howard Township.
The Michigan State Police Niles Post wrapped up its initial investigation into the alleged incident and turned over that information to the prosecutor’s office earlier this week.
It is unclear when the prosecutor’s office will make its decision.
Det. Fabian Suarez, of the Michigan State Police, said late last month that his office was investigating an alleged embezzlement of public funds by an employee of Howard Township, who remains unnamed pending charges being filed.
The person in question has since been dismissed from their job after 12 years employment with the township, he said.
According to the state police, two township employees discovered discrepancies in township financial records and turned the investigation over to state police Aug. 12.
A preliminary investigation revealed questions pertaining to missing rental payments, fraudulent health insurance payments received and, possibly, some tax cash payments made by township residents.
Police said the Howard Township office cooperated fully with the investigation.
