Niles area residents can expect to hear an extra weather alert siren this week.
Fire Chief Larry Lamb said the City of Niles would test the weather alert system at 1 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month and at 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month from March through November.
The city added the Wednesday test to the calendar after Milton Township installed its new weather alert system, which runs in cooperation with Niles’ system.
Previously, the city only tested the siren on the first Saturday of the month.
The weather alert system is activated when the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, if a tornado or rotation is reported by a reputable source or at the official request of emergency management personnel.
