The streets of downtown Dowagiac will be transformed into a gear head’s paradise on Saturday, as the Rod & Roll Classic Auto Show returns to the city for the 25th year.
Automobiles of various make, model and vintage, hailing from all over southwest Michigan, will line Front, Commercial and Beeson streets during the Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce car show, which runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will have an opportunity to gaze upon the gasoline-powered machines and chat with fellow car-enthusiasts assembled for the show.
Around 100 people have preregistered to have their vehicles displayed during this year’s event, with an even larger number expected to register their classic automobile the day of the event, said event chair Kris Lamphere.
“We average about 200 vehicles every year,” Lamphere said. “Given that the good weather is predicted, we expect even more than that to turn out Saturday.”
Lamphere, the owner of downtown’s Who kNEW Consignment and chamber treasurer, is once again helming the event, assisted by employees with Dowagiac’s Honor Credit Union.
Participants will also be judging each other’s automobiles during the show, with the top 20 vote getters receiving trophies during the celebratory trophy ride, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. Miss Dowagiac 2015 Tori Smith will also pick out her favorite vehicle for the Queen’s Choice Award.
Activities for visitors are also lined up throughout the show, including a Lions Club pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m., Sustainable Recycling/ PADNOS Crunched Car Contest from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and oldies music presented by DJ Bill Craft from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Registration for the car show begins at 7 a.m., and costs $20. Participants will receive a swag bag that includes a T-shirt, mug, and dash plaque.
“Come out for the music, fun and camaraderie,” Lamphere said.
