BUCHANAN — The Buchanan District Library’s fundraising campaign received a big jolt of energy this week.
On Tuesday, library officials accepted a $10,000 grant from Indiana Michigan Power on behalf of the AEP Foundation.
Library Director Barbara Wallace said the money would go toward building a large community room on the second floor — equipped with a full kitchen — to support new programming, local businesses and organizations.
“It’s the largest donation we’ve received yet,” she said. “We are very grateful.”
The library’s three-phase capital campaign has a goal of raising approximately $900,000.
Phase one was completed this summer, including the relocation of the circulation desk and renovations to the children’s area and office space.
For the second phase, the library will open an entrance on Front Street and install an elevator for easy access to the second floor.
Wallace said they’ve raised about $185,000 of the $285,000 needed to complete phase two.
Indiana Michigan Power’s grant money is being set aside for work that will be done in phase three, which includes the construction of a community room, kitchen and installation of new windows for the building.
The library will keep track of its fundraising efforts by marking milestones reached on a large banner that wraps around the front and side of the building.
