Catherine Marie Sayer, 68 of Niles, Michigan died on Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana following a brief illness. She was born on June 24, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan to Paul R. and Bertha Ceil (McGovern) Schikora.
Catherine graduated from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School in Farmington, Michigan and attended Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. She came to Niles with a college friend to visit and met and soon married Bruce F. Sayer. They were wed at her hometown church, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, in Farmington on April 22, 1972 and then resided in Niles.
Catherine was a long-time member of Saint Mark Catholic Church in Niles where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was a wonderful mother and loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and was a talented artist, especially with oil paints.
Surviving family includes her husband of 43 years, Bruce Sayer of Niles; two sons, Matt Sayer and Tim (& Melissa) Sayer and grandchildren, Breeann, Timothy G. and Blake, all of Niles. She was preceded in death by one son, Aaron Sayer, a brother, Christopher Schikora and a sister, Bernadette Hanlon.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Catherine Marie Sayer will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, at Saint Mark Catholic Church’s Parish Center in Niles by The Rev. Thomas King, C.S.C. of the church and assisted by Brother Dennis Meyers, C.S.C. Committal Rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Niles.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015 at the Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles with recitation of The Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Donations in memory of Catherine may be made to Saint Mark Catholic Church, Niles.
