A treehouse for Bailey

Every child’s dream is to have a treehouse — a place to call their own, high above the ground, where they can live out their own adventures.
That dream is coming true for Bailey Bennett, a Niles third-grader who is in his second battle with brain cancer.
“Excited,” Bennett said when asked how he felt when he learned he would get his wish.
The tree house is being made possible by One Good Deed Michiana, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those who help others.
Niles native Allison Hayes started the charity because of the overwhelming support her family received after she lost her husband in 2012.
“We wanted to do One Good Deed as a pay-it-forward kind of thing,” Hayes said. “Our big thing is recognizing people who go out of their way to help others because one good deed can change a life.”
Brian Shier, of Shier Signature Home in Niles, is providing the labor at a substantial discount, while Universal Forest Products provided materials free of charge.
Shier and a few others began work on the project Thursday and by Friday morning they had already built the deck anchored to three trees some 15 feet off the ground.
Shier said the peak of the roof would reach about 25 feet when the enclosed structure is finished, likely by Monday.
“We’ve been really impressed with what Allison has done with (One Good Deed), so we were excited to get involved and help build,” Shier said. “It’s our first tree house, but we did watch an episode of Treehouse Masters (a TV show).”
In addition to providing funding to build Bailey’s treehouse, One Good Deed paid for Bailey’s sister, Shelby, to attend a theater camp in August.
Bailey’s father, Andy, and mother, Stefanie, said they’d like to thank everyone involved in the project and everyone who has helped them the past couple years.
“There were a lot of people that came together to make this happen,” Stefanie said. “We want to thank them and Allison for thinking about us.”
Bailey was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2012. It went into remission last year, but returned a few months later.
Stefanie said Bailey is doing well as he continues to undergo chemotherapy treatment.
“We know it is working,” she said. “There are spots that are already gone.”
Allison, who is a friend of the Bennett family, said she chose them because of the work Stefanie does to help others even while her son is battling cancer.
Allison said the Baileys collect toys for other children that come to the hospital where Bailey receives his treatment.
“I think what their mom is doing for other kids and families who are going through it is awesome,” Hayes said. “I think she is an awesome example of what we are about.”
