Betty Jo Shelton, 82, of Granger, Indiana died at 12:05 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015, at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross, following an extended illness. Betty was born on Dec. 14, 1932, in Paducah, Kentucky to John and Norma Jean (Settle) Kasper. She graduated from Tilghman High School in Paducah, moving to Niles in 1953.
On May 9, 1953, in Meridian, Mississippi she married James C. Shelton, with whom she celebrated the 62nd anniversary of their wedding.
Betty worked at Shelton’s Farm Market for many years alongside her husband Jim. She loved music, especially from her era, including Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Patsy Cline, and later Alan Jackson. She enjoyed reading, doing jigsaw and word puzzles, attending family activities and picnics, and working with the young people at market. Her sacrifice and diligence was important to the early success of Shelton Farms where she was lovingly known to all as “Miss Betty.”
The most important thing of all to Betty was her family. She loved her grandkids dearly, always following their many activities.
Surviving family includes her husband, James C. Shelton and their children, Mike (Kathleen) Shelton, Patresa Shelton, Kimberly Shelton, and Kevin (Kim) Shelton all of Niles, and Jon Shelton (Lisa) of Simi Valley, California; grandchildren Kelly (Corey) Marrow, Sarah (Jim) Zawacki, Brandon (Jenifer) Hood, Joshua (Willow Wyman) Hood, Nicholas Shelton, twins MacKenzie and Michael Shelton, Alison (Betsy) Moss, Dan Cloutier, Jesse (Mandy) Johnson, Katie (Tanner) Riley, April (Troy) Meek, James Shelton, Kamden Bestle, Jimmy, Sam Shelton, and Charlie Shelton; and 22 great-grandchildren.
