Shooting in Bertrand Twp. injures one

A Niles man was shot in the chest after an alcohol-fueled argument with a person living in the same house Sunday afternoon in Bertrand Township.
The victim was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition, according to the Michigan State Police Niles Post.
The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. in the 1200 block of West Bertrand Road.
According to police, the victim was found on the front porch of his residence with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
A preliminary investigation found the victim and a resident of the same house got into an argument and the victim was shot once in the chest. Alcohol appears to be a factor in this shooting, police said
The suspect is a 24 year old Niles resident and was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, felony firearm and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
The names of the victim and suspect will be released pending notification of the victim’s family and arraignment of the suspect in the 5th District Court in St. Joseph.
