Aug. 10, 1942 — June 1, 2015

Michael L. Smith, 72, of Decatur passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 in Bronson Methodist Hospital Kalamazoo surrounded by family and friends. Michael was born Aug. 10, 1942, in Lansing to Donald and Irene June (Herbert) Smith.

He married Kathryn L. Hammond on Aug. 26, 1961, in Jackson, Michigan. She preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 2015.

He is survived by his two sons Craig (Deb) Smith of Decatur and Keith (Karen) Smith of Shelby Township, his six grandchildren Brandon, Adam, Brooke, Rachel, Camyrn and Setphanie and a sister Susan (Mike) Munn of Dimondale, Michigan. He was a pharmacist, retired from Rite Aid Pharmacy in Dowagiac. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Paul’s Pharmacy in Holland, Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw, K-Mart, Mike’s Pharmacy in Coloma and Narregan Drugs in Decatur. He was a member of the Decatur JC’s and a member of AA with 30 years sobriety.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, June 5 at the Newell Funeral Home Decatur with James Abshagen officiating. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday. Cremation will follow the services. Memorials may be made to Rose Arbor Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
