Old Tavern Inn burgers make state best-of list

A Niles business has been included on a website’s list of the best places to get a burger in Michigan.
Old Tavern Inn came in at No. 14 on onlyinyourstate.com’s compilation of the 23 mouth-watering burger joints that will make your taste buds go crazy. The top contenders were released last week.
Here’s how they described their list:
“The burger. We all have our opinions about what makes the best burger and we all have our hometown favorites. With summer road trips on the horizon, we thought we would compile a guide to some of Michigan’s most beloved burgers all over the state. Some are legends, known all over. Others are small town heroes. We hope we’ve put together a decent sampling of some of the spots that you know and love.”
Kelli Vance is a manager at the Old Tavern Inn, which is located 61088 Indian Lake Road.
She said the tavern is the state’s oldest continuing business that rests on its original foundation. It was established as a tavern in 1835, and contains many old photographs of how the building used to look and function.
When asked why she thought they made the list, Vance said it might be because of the combination of history and burger quality.
She said they use fresh burger every day and offer traditional style burgers, like a regular hamburger, cheeseburger, bacon cheeseburger and olive burger.
“We don’t have any crazy ones,” she said.
It is possible, Vance said, that they received an uptick in business after the list came out.
“I don’t know if it was a fluke or what but yesterday (Wednesday) we were so busy and everyone during lunch had burgers, so I think they read the article,” she said.
Jeff and Val Gaideski have owned the tavern for about 10 years.
