Three Niles public safety workers received special recognition during a presentation at Monday’s Niles City Council meeting.

Niles 911 dispatcher Eric Ruth was presented with a Commander’s Commendation Letter for his work in convincing a suicidal caller to surrender his weapon after the caller threated to kill himself and police in November.

“Dispatcher Ruth maintained the safety of everyone involved,” said Mayor Mike McCauslin. “(He) is a credit to the City of Niles Police Department, his profession and the community which he serves.”

Also receiving a Commander’s Commendation Letter was Niles Police Officer Nathan Adamczyk, who responded in November to a call of a juvenile threatening suicide with a knife inside a Niles garage.

Adamczyk was able to talk the juvenile into peacefully surrendering the knife without the use of secondary, less-lethal weapons or deadly force.

Niles Police Officer Shane Daniel was given a Departmental Citation for his work in using a tazer to neutralize a man who had stabbed four people on an Amtrak train that had stopped at the Niles Depot in December.

McCauslin said the city is fortunate to have such a high quality and professional level of police and 911 services.

“To know that they are here to serve us and to meet our needs is quite a comforting thought for everyone in our community,” he said.

Also Monday, the council:

• Approved a request from the Niles Community Gardens to receive $2,000 in free water for use in the 2015 growing season.

• Approved a request from the Fort St. Joseph Archaeology Advisory Committee for the sponsorship of $2,500 for this year’s Archeology Open House.

• Gave approval to Niles New Tech to hold a “Niles Team Hope Walk” fundraiser May 23 at Riverfront Park trail to benefit the Huntington’s Disease Society of America.

• Approved the expansion of Wonderland Cinema’s Class C liquor license to include BrewPub services. City Administrator Ric Huff said it would allow the cinema to provide customers with the ability to customize their own beer and pick it up later. It is unclear when the cinema would start such an operation.

• Entered into an agreement with Midwest Connections, of Cassopolis, to provide services of building fiber optic connections to homes and businesses in the Niles Industrial Park, and other communication services.
