Edwardsburg’s baseball team totaled only five hits Monday in a doubleheader against St. Joseph and lost twice to the Bears, 5-3 and 1-0.
Game two was called after five innings because of darkness.
“We’ve just got to put the ball in play,” Edwardsburg baseball coach A.J. Gaideski said. “When we do put the ball in play we’re popping up. We’ve got to make teams work a little bit.”
In the opener, the Eddies led 2-1 after four innings despite not having a hit. Three straight walks after one out in the second helped Edwardsburg score twice. The Eddies scored on a St. Joseph error and on a squeeze bunt from Jacob Kanaby.
The Bears scored on a wild pitch in the third and got a two-run homer from Eric Engel in a three-run fifth.
Edwardsburg pulled within 4-3 in the fifth on Jesse Reinebold’s RBI groundout. The run was unearned.
St. Joseph scored an unearned run in the seventh.
The lone run in game two came home on Craig Smith’s RBI double in the fifth inning.
“(St. Joseph) just hit the ball well and did a good job in winning two games,” Gaideski said.
The Eddies left runners on second base in the first, second and fourth innings.
Derek Pierce pitched well in defeat for the Eddies. He allowed only four hits and walked two. Pierce got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth inning.
