Honoring our winter unsung heroes

We all know the past two winters have been tough. We had nine snow days last year, and this year we have eight already. Hopefully, we don’t have to cancel school anymore this winter, and we can enjoy spring sometime in March.

Even on the days we’ve had school, you all know that winter driving isn’t the easiest effort of the day. We know what “snow covered and slippery” means and many of us have driven over “black ice” on our way to and from school and been surprised. Driving past any kind of open area on a really windy winter day can make visibility extremely tough, too.

Now, think about the above conditions and navigating the road with 60 or more talkative, energetic kids in your vehicle. Think about pulling your vehicle over at the right time and place and making sure those kids get on and off safely, all while you’re paying attention to traffic and those many passengers to make sure they’re behaving.

If you can picture how tough that above scenario is, you can appreciate what our Brandywine bus drivers and all other school drivers do all winter long. On very early, frigid, dark mornings, these men and women get out and make sure their buses are started, safe, and ready for the day’s routes. They then go about their jobs and deliver our students safely to and from school. If you see a bus driver, or know a bus driver, take some time to thank them for the safe, steady work they do.

Great job, ladies and gentlemen!
