After beating Eau Claire, 37-22, in a Division IV district team wrestling district final on Thursday, Brandywine High School athletic director Vance Stratton handed the championship trophy to Brandywine wrestling coach Rex Pomranka and soon after, a team photo was taken.
There was no excessive celebration from the Brandywine wrestling team.
The Bobcats expect success in the opening round of the state tournament in team wrestling. Thursday marked the 10th straight and 19th in the last 20 years that Brandywine claimed the team wrestling district title.
“It’s kind of a tradition here,” Brandywine wrestling coach Rex Pomranka said about winning another team wrestling district title. “They are all special. Every year it’s a different group of kids that we have.”
Charlie Rodriguez’s win by forfeit at 215 pounds gave Brandywine a 33-22 lead and clinched another district title for the Bobcats.
“(Eau Claire) gave us a run for our money,” Pomranka said. “My hats off to them putting a lineup together to go against us.”
Brandywine got pins from Michael Kachur (112) and Corbin Eckenberger (145) and wins from Kaci Lintz (125), Jesse Lochmondy (130), Sam Burge (152), Rodriguez (215) and Cordell Davis (285).
“The whole team is peaking,” Pomranka said. “What we teach the kids is that everything done up to this point is preseason. This is the real season.”
Neither team fielded a full lineup as Brandywine won three matches by forfeit and Eau Claire won one match by forfeit. There were also two weights that were double voids.
Brandywine advances to the team regional Wednesday and will face host Decatur at 6 p.m. in the semifinals.
