Brandywine girls basketball coach Josh Hood had little to say to his team at halftime Wednesday.

No adjustments were needed by the third-ranked (Class C) Bobcats as Brandywine went into halftime with a 49-7 lead over Hartford and would eventually roll to a 61-7 win.

The Bobcats, who improved to 16-1, spent only two minutes in the locker room at halftime. When the Brandywine players came back on the court time was spent working on shooting drills with Hood and assistant coach Pat Touhey.

“I was just proud of them,” Hood said about his team’s play in the first half, which including seven 3-pointers.

All nine players that played for Brandywine scored. Brooke Smith led the way with 14 points. She also had six rebounds and two steals. Emily Erwin added 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and Makenna Hartline had 10 points, five steals and four rebounds. Michaela Hartline had a team-high seven rebounds to go with her three steals.

Erwin was the lone starter who got significant minutes in the second half. Erwin became the school’s ninth leading scorer in the first half. The 5-7 junior now has 593 points for her career.

Brandywine finished 14-of-15 from the free-throw line and forced 34 turnovers.

“I’ve been talking to them about the big picture,” Hood said. “We’ve got to keep getting better if we want to make a run in the state tournament.

“The last few games I’ve been disappointed with our energy. In our practices we’ve been more energetic.

“We were not sleep-walking tonight. We came out with a lot more energy and effort. One through nine I thought we were unselfish, our rotations on defense were a lot better and we were a lot more hungry.”

Hartford, which fell to 6-11, was playing without leading scorer Mariah Mireles, who suffered a knee injury on Tuesday against Gobles.
