Cassopolis junior Nick Baker, who didn’t wrestle last year, helped the Rangers Wednesday beat Brandywine for the first time since 2005.
Baker’s win in the final match at 135 pounds gave Cassopolis a 39-35 BCS Athletic Conference win.
“It feels good,” Cassopolis wrestling coach Josh Rinehart said about beating Brandywine. “That’s probably the best we’ve wrestled all year top to bottom.
“They’re probably not where they’ve been in the last few years. But, we’ll take a win. We’ll definitely take a win.”
Baker pinned freshman Marquell Peterson in 3:13.
“I had him as a freshman and he got knocked out completely in a match at Covert midway through the year and he didn’t come out last year as a sophomore,” Rinehart said. “We got him back out this year and he’s done a nice job for us.”
Cassopolis also got pins from 140-pounder Cross Borsa and 285-pounder Reece West.
The Rangers got another key win at 215 pounds where Tymari Brown edged Charlie Rodriguez, 4-3, to give Cassopolis a 21-17 lead.
“Cross Borsa at 140 was huge,” Rinehart said. “Getting six points there was massive. Tymari at 215 was a tough match.”
Brandywine got pins from 152-pounder Sam Burge and 130-pounder Jesse Lochmondy. Lochmondy’s win gave the Bobcats a 35-33 lead.
“We’re a young team,” Brandywine wrestling coach Rex Pomranka said. “I’ve got one senior, one junior that’s been wrestling for three years and another junior that’s been wrestling for two years. The kids did what we asked. It was a heck of a match. We’ll just take it and go back to work.”
In other matches, Brandywine beat Eau Claire, 53-19 and Cassopolis beat a combined team from New Buffalo and Bridgman, 48-30.
“It’s been awhile since we’ve won two duals in a night,” Rinehart said.
