Brandywine girls basketball coach Josh Hood was in no mood to celebrate after his team’s 47-20 BCS Athletic Conference win over Cassopolis on Tuesday.

“I guess the only positive is that nobody got hurt,” said Hood, whose team improved to 4-0. “We had no effort and were lackadaisical. We’ve had two really bad days in a row. We had a really bad practice (Monday).

“As a coach, and it starts with me, I need to figure out how to get our kids motivated to play at a high level at all times. We’re not playing at a level right now that warrants success.”

The Bobcats shot only 25-percent (16-of-65) from the field, were only 11-of-20 from the free-throw line and committed 20 turnovers.

But Cassopolis was unable to take advantage of Brandywine’s struggles. The Rangers turned the ball over 39 times, shot 22-percent (8-of-37) from the field and missed eight of their 10 free throws.

“We didn’t do what we worked on,” said Cassopolis girls basketball coach Nat Pittman, whose team fell to 1-4. “We threw the ball away too much. Our defense was lacking and our rebounding was terrible.

“There’s things we have work on and improve upon.”

A 9-0 run gave Brandywine a 28-12 lead with 1:00 left in the second quarter. Michaela Hartline’s three-point play capped the run.

Hartline and Emily Erwin each scored 11 points to lead the Bobcats.

Brandywine finished with a 42-29 rebounding advantage with Brooke Smith pulling down 11 boards and Makenna Hartline adding 10.

“This team has got a lot of growing up to do,” Hood said. “We have a long ways to go.

“I’m really disappointed with our performance tonight.”

Kortenei Suggs scored 10 points to lead the Rangers.
