Unique company fights human sex trafficking through sales

Margaret Matthews has had plenty of sales jobs before, but never one that made her this excited to go to work.
“All of us need to make a living, but it is really cool to know you are making a difference as well,” said the Niles resident and salesperson for Better Way Imports, a unique direct sales company headquartered in Holland, Michigan.
Matthews, who recently became a member business of the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce, sells handmade and high-quality items like bags, jewelry and quilts at parties throughout the Michiana area.
What makes the products she sells different, Matthews said, is that they are all made by people who used to be victims of the human sex trafficking trade.
Several organizations around the world free these slaves, she explained, and teach them how to make a living by creating high quality jewelry and other items. Those items are then bought by Better Way Imports and sold to people in our area.
“When I saw this and the purpose behind it, I jumped on board,” said Matthews, who has been a salesperson, or “freedom fighter,” for nearly two years. “I know everything I sell is helping free more women and providing income for women who have been freed as well.”
According to information provided by the Four Flags Area Chamber of Commerce, Better Way Imports provides fair trade work for more than 900 women.
Matthews said it takes about $600 in sales to free one woman for a year.
