Good deals for a good cause

Niles shoppers will have a chance to win big while helping out a good cause during Small Business Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 29, people who drop off an item for donation at participating Niles businesses will receive a raffle ticket that could win them the grand prize of a flat screen television.
Donations will go to the Niles Service League, a non-profit that provides services for children in the Niles, Buchanan and Brandywine communities.
“They (Niles Service League) are trying to create awareness for who they are and what they do,” said Christine Hoffman, owner of downtown business Niles Styles. “It was a natural thing to choose a local organization like the service league that helps out children in our area.”
People can donate the following new items to receive a ticket:
• Mittens or gloves
• Warm winter hats
• A toy (coloring book and crayons, puzzle, teddy bear, games)
A ticket will be handed out for every item donated with no limit. People can also donate $5 for one ticket.
“We are trying to collect as much as we can,” Hoffman said.
Businesses participating are: Niles Styles, Bella’s Gifts and Memories, Rumor Has It, Pizza Transit, Main Street Antiques and MCM Discounts.
The winning ticket for the grand prize will be drawn during the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on Main and Second streets around 6:30 p.m.
People can also support the Niles Service League by participating in a Cookie Walk at 223 E. Main St. Participants will get a coffee can full of cookies and a picture with Rudolph for $10. It begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until all cookies are gone. Proceeds will support the Niles Service League.
Niles Styles and Bella’s Gifts and Memories will also sell Niles-themed ornaments with proceeds going to the Niles Service League on Small Business Saturday.
Downtown businesses will continue to collect items through Dec. 19, although no tickets will be handed out after Nov. 29.
Participating businesses will have a sign displayed on their storefront.
