Niles penny candy store relocates

A dollar will not go very far at most businesses.
At the Candy Shack in Niles, that same amount will buy enough sweets to last several days — depending on the person.
“I’m a faithful customer because I love candy — especially when I’m working,” said South Bend, Indiana resident Latisha Eddie, who used $5 to purchase enough candy to fill a small paper bag Thursday afternoon. “I need my sweets and this is the only candy store I know around here.”
Located at 28 S. 4th St. in Niles, the Candy Shack offers current and vintage candies ranging in price from a penny to $1.
It is not a new business.
Owner Cortez Parchman said he reopened the Candy Shack in early July after moving from its former location at 906 Main St., where he operated since the summer of 2010.
A Niles native, Parchman said the store harkens back to the days of his childhood when he said neighbors would sell penny candy out of their homes.
“I just remember having to go out everyday to get candy — me and a bunch of other kids,” said the 1992 Niles High graduate.
It is not unusual, Parchman said, for kids to spend time collecting pennies off the street and exchanging them for wild cherry chews or tootsie rolls in his shop.
“I’ve seen them come in with zip lock bags full of pennies,” he said. “They will give me hugs and say, ‘we love this store.’”
The Candy Shack is open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
