Despite eight errors, Edwardsburg’s baseball team was able to beat Cassopolis, 5-3, in non-conference action on Monday.
The Eddies committed at least one error in every inning but the sixth.
“It was ugly,” said Edwardsburg baseball coach A.J. Gaideski. “But, we ended up winning and that’s the good thing about it.”
Winning pitcher Damion Pompey overcame the errors. Pompey, who improved to 3-0, allowed one earned run, five hits, struck out three and walked three.
Cassopolis stranded nine baserunners in the game, seven in scoring position. The Rangers left runners on first and second to end the game.
“Our pitcher just kept fighting and kept battling,” Gaideski said. “He kept his head about him and did well.”
Edwardsburg to a two-run single from Jackson Gaideski and an RBI single from Jesse Reinebold in a four-run second inning. Reinebold added an RBI single in the fourth inning.
The Rangers used four pitchers in the game. Jeremiah Hartsell went three innings and allowed one earned run and two hits and walked none.
“I thought our pitchers did a really nice job,” said Cassopolis coach Matt Brawley. “We’ve got a conference game (today against Buchanan) and we alway pitch a bullpen a day before (conference games) so our No. 1 (Lance Sheteron), 2 (J.J. Smith) and 3 pitchers (Vashaun Morgan) pitched one inning so they’ll be good to go tommorrow. Jeremiah hasn’t pitched much and he did a great job pitching. He threw strikes and got them swinging.”
Smith singled twice and scored twice for the Rangers.
