With business up 75 percent this year after a record 2012, Lyons Industries Inc. breaks ground Oct. 2 on a 32,000-square-foot expansion which will increase its plant at 30000 M-62 West by a third.

The addition to its 98,000-square-foot facility will provide warehouse space for order staging, a driver’s lounge, a larger shipping office and 10 shipping docks.

Surrounding the addition is expanded parking for semi traffic and staging, improved truck traffic flow and more employee parking.

Lyons, which also operates in the former James Heddon’s Sons factory on West Street, manufactures bathtubs, whirlpools, showers, sinks and doors for high-volume retail and wholesale accounts in the United States and Canada.

Lyons also produces for OEM (original equipment manufacturer) and after-market accounts in the recreational vehicle (RV) and mobile home/manufactured housing industries.

President Lance Lyons said rapid growth made this expansion necessary.

“Last year was a record year for us,” he said Friday. “This year sales are up 75 percent over last year. This explosive growth is unlike anything we’ve seen in our 45-year history. We can’t hire fast enough. We’ve got all kinds of openings.”

Lyons credits growth to new products, new customers and an improving economy.

“We average a new product about every three weeks,” he said. “This allows us to react quickly to our customer’s needs and to capitalize on market opportunities faster than our competition.”

Lyons is hiring more than 45 people for positions throughout the plant, including production, mold-making and shipping.

“We’re manufacturing 1,500 products a day with 175 people,” Lyons said. “We need more help to keep up with demand. It’s a great problem to have.”

Ancon Construction began the expansion in late August.

Project Manager Doug VonGunten expects the addition to be completed by the end of February 2014.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2.
