Dowagiac wins own Chieftain Invitational

Nick Foote scored in the 52nd minute to lift the Dowagiac soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Michigan Lutheran in the title match of the Chieftain Invitational Saturday.
The Chieftains advanced to the finals of the round robin tournament with a 5-0 win over Cassopolis. The Titans blanked the Rangers 6-0 to reach the title match.
Lutheran took a 1-0 halftime lead against Dowagiac on a goal by Zach Burkhardt.
The Chieftains tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by Jeremiah Guernsey in the 50th minute. Foote recorded the winning goal two minutes later.
The Tigers held an 18-9 advantage in shots on goal against Dowagiac. Nate Stewart came up with six saves for the Chieftains.
Against Cassopolis, Tony Solis, Antonio Reynaga and Guernsey all scored first half goals for Dowagiac. Aubrey Huston and Nick Carpenter scored in the second half.
Cassopolis’ Gary Cooper had a total of 27 saves in the two matches.
