Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood’s deputies investigated weekend crashes in Silver Creek and in Newberg townships.
On Aug. 17 at 4:42 a.m., officers were summoned to Downey Street near M-51 for a vehicle crash with injuries when eastbound Rodolfo Garcia Jr., 26, of Dowagiac, lost control on Downey, ran off the road and hit a tree.
Garcia received minor injuries, for which he was transported by Pride Care Ambulance to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Alcohol was a factor in the crash. Seatbelt use was not known. The incident remains under investigation.
The other mishap, on M-40, near Hoffman Street, occurred at 11:03 a.m. Aug. 17.
Deputies stated a vehicle driven by Kevin Szeszulski, 44, of Marcellus, was stopped on the roadway waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn.
A vehicle driven by James Sheridan, 78, of Douglas, did not see the stopped vehicle because he was looking at the pipeline construction and rear-ended Szeszulski.
Alcohol was not a factor in the Newberg crash and safety belts were used.
Airbags deployed in Sheridan’s vehicle. Both men experienced minor injuries treated at the scene by Newberg Ambulance and released.
Newberg Ambulance, Newberg Fire Department and pipeline construction crews assisted the Cass County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
The crash remained under investigation.
