Garrett Leroy Snyder, Jr., 80, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Tuesday, August 13, 2013 in The Timbers of Dowagiac, in the presence of his family.
Garrett was born April 7, 1933 in Benton Harbor to Garrett and Helen (Wolford) Snyder. He married Vivian Alene Dickerho of Dec. 26, 1952 in Dowagiac. She survives.
Garrett served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Village of Cassopolis, serving as the Superintendent of the Department of Public Works. Garrett was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and liked to dance with them. Garrett and Vivian were regular square dancers. Garrett loved to talk, and his sarcasm and wit were well known. He loved family and was excited when everyone got together. He enjoyed traveling. Garrett had a big heart and would do anything for anybody.
Garrett will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Vivian (Dickerhoof) Snyder of Cassopolis; one daughter, Brenda (Mike) Smego of Cassopolis; two sons, Ron (Tracy) Snyder of Cassopolis and Jim (Carol) Snyder of Cassopolis; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Carolyn (Ben) Sherman of Kalamazoo, Joyce Preis of Dowagiac, Sharon (Don) Paulsen of Cassopolis, Pat Stratton of Cadillac; two brothers, Jack (Hazel) Snyder of Niles and Tom (Sarah) Snyder of Edwardsburg.
Family and friends will gather Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, from 4 p.m. until time of service at 6 p.m. in Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 N. Broadway St., Cassopolis, with Pastor Larry Settle officiating. Mr. Snyder’s remains will be laid to rest in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Cassopolis, where he will be accorded full Military Honors.
