Watson, Miller earn singles titles

Sue Watson defeated Mackenzie Ruff and Madison Proshwitz to win a record 16th Dowagiac City Tennis Tournament women’s singles championship Sunday.
In the men’s championship match, Niles’ Bradley Miller defeated Niles’ Dave Negron 6-0 and 6-1 to win his first city single title.
Watson defeated Proshwitz 6-0 and 6-0 Saturday and then defeated Ruff 6-0, 6-2 Sunday.
Proshwitz defeated Ruff 6-2 and 6-3 to earn the runner-up spot.
Miller advanced to the finals after defeating Ethan Wagner, Marc Tyrakowski and Adam Carlson. Miller defeated Tyrakowski 6-2 and 6-2 before knocking off Carlson 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2 in the semifinals.
Negron, who was defeated in the semifinals of the 2012 tournament, defeated Vaughn Herter 6-2 and 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Larry Watson 7-5 and 6-2 in the semifinals.
Carlson reached the semifinals with a 6-2 and 6-1 win over Sonny Swartz, while Watson moved to the semifinals with a 6-1 and 6-1 win over Zach Davis.
This weekend the city tournament will wrap up with men’s and women’s doubles Saturday and mixed doubles Sunday.
All matches will be played beginning at 8 a.m. at the Dowagiac Middle School courts.
