CASSOPOLIS — Visiting Dowagiac made quick work of the Cassopolis softball team Tuesday afternoon.
The Chieftains rolled to a 12-2 win in seven innings in the first came and then used a 14-run first inning in the second game to win 19-0 in three innings.
“We were kind of going through the motions in the first game and didn’t play as well as we could have,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “I challenged the girls before the second game to perform better and we came out and had 14 batters reach before we made an out and had 18 batters total in the first inning. We just focused better and were able to drive the ball hard.”
In the opening game, Kourtney Mitchell, Emily Roach, Tori Smith and Miranda Schmidt all had two hits for the Chieftains. Smith doubled, while Schmidt drove in a pair of runs.
Dowagiac also got a double and two RBIs from Rachel Bailey.
Alyssa Allen and Smith combined to scatter seven hits.
Logan Lawson was 3-for-4 for the Rangers, who also got hits from Cheryl Simpson, Erica Williams, Kaylyn Forrest and Michelle Green.
In the second game, Sabrina Ruiz tossed a one-hitter for Dowagiac.
The Chieftains scored 19 runs on 17 hits, including Mitchell’s 3-for-4 performance with a double and four RBIs. Bailey was also 3-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs.
Brianna McCuddy was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Shelby Huston was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs.
