Chemical Bank robbery suspect arrested

A 44-year-old Benton Harbor man has been arrested for robbing the Chemical Bank in Niles Friday.
According to police, Richard David Smith was arrested without incident at a residence in the 100 block of Catalpa Street in Benton Harbor Wednesday.
Smith was lodged at the Berrien County Jail in St. Joseph and will be arraigned today in Niles Fifth District Court.
According to a press release, police received several tips after the robbery of Chemical Bank, 407 E. Main St. Niles, on Friday.
Niles detectives followed up each of those tips and were able to develop Smith as a suspect. Through additional investigation, detectives were able to locate evidence to support their belief that Smith was responsible for the robbery. On Feb. 20, the Berrien County Prosecutor’s office issued a two-count arrest warrant for Smith.
Smith is facing preliminary charges of bank robbery and armed robbery.
