A pink rink!
Kalamazoo Wings (“K-Wings”) are turning the ice pink and wearing pink to raise awareness about breast cancer for the second annual “Susan G. Komen of Southwest Michigan Night”on Friday, Feb. 15, at Wings Stadium, 3600 Vanrick Drive, Kalamazoo.
Doors open to the public at 6:30 p.m. for the event sponsored by Consumers Energy.
The evening celebrates survivors and remembers those who lost their battle.
Denise Bohn Stewart, a 4 1/2-year survivor and mother of three, said Friday there will be a diverse group of 22 survivors, many from Berrien County, honored during a special ceremony involving the players.
There will also be a silent auction, a chuck-a-puck game and other surprises, including a special Valentine’s jersey worn during the game, then put up for bid.
Stewart said numbered foam pucks cost a dollar and earn prizes based on closeness to a target.
A portion of proceeds goes directly to the Komen Southwest Michigan affiliate.
Last year, this event nearly sold out and raised more than $5,000, according to Stewart, a WSBT-TV reporter, Komen board member and event co-coordinator.
The Susan G. Komen Southwest Michigan affiliate granted more than $300,000 last year to community health programs, offering breast health screenings and treatment assistance to uninsured or underinsured men and women in its eight-county service area.
Event organizers put together a special “Pink Pack” for the fundraiser, which includes a game ticket and a souvenir pink T-shirt.
All of the money from T-shirt sales goes directly to the local Komen affiliate.
Special game ticket prices are red level-$24.50; white level-$20; children (2-14)-$10.
Tickets are available at the Wings Stadium box office or by calling (800) 745-3000. Groups of 15 or more should call (269) 271-2915 for pricing.
