CASSOPOLIS — A $99,587 agreement between Marcellus Township and Cass County Sheriff’s Office was approved Jan. 17 by the Board of Commissioners for 40 hours of law enforcement coverage per week. Marcellus pays 100 percent of telephone fees and houses police officers in its hall. There will be a vehicle assigned to the township and the sheriff is responsible for preparing a 2014 budget 60 days before Dec. 31. Monthly reports at meetings keep the township abreast of activities. Sheriff Joe Underwood said patrols proved so successful in curbing crime in the northeast corner of the county that when the initial COPS grant expired, Marcellus voters twice passed millage to continue. “This is the seventh year,” the sheriff said. Supervisor Larry Davis signed the contract Jan. 5.
