Buchanan hill thrills this weekend

If you have a giant hill, you might as well put it to good use.

That’s Buchanan’s philosophy anyway.

For the second straight year, the southwestern Michigan city is offering Thrill on the Hill, a tubing/sledding event that makes use of the city’s rolling landscape.

“It’s a great way to get people to come to Buchanan,” said city manager Bill Marx. “It’s good for businesses and fun for families.”

It’s not expensive, either.

Children and adults can buy a wristband allowing unlimited trips down the hill, located on Front Street in the city’s downtown area. Cost for a wristband is $5 during the all ages run from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25. An adults only “midnight run” will follow Friday from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.

All ages sledding ramps up again Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The cost for a wristband on Saturday is just $3.

Approximately 4,000 people attended last year’s event, prompting city leaders to put on another one.

Visitors can expect a few new things this year.

This year’s run will feature a 12-foot by 8-foot ramp for catching air and a smaller ramp for children.

The event also features a DJ, concessions and people in costumes, including Swoop of the South Bend Silver Hawks.

What if there’s no snow?

The city has that covered too. It bought a snowmaker last week in the event that Mother Nature didn’t cooperate.

Buchanan received around 6 inches of new snow last weekend, so snow shouldn’t be an issue.
