Local man arrested for drugs, weapons

A Dowagiac man arrested for drug and weapons offenses Tuesday was also wanted by city police for three outstanding child support warrants.
Public Safety Director Tom Atkinson said police officers went to a residence in the 300 block of South Front Street to locate Ashley Latron Nickens.
During a search of the residence, officers reported locating illegal drugs and two weapons, including a loaded handgun.
Police seized about 40 bags of marijuana packaged for sale and evidence of drug distribution.
Nickens was lodged at the Cass County Jail and arraigned in Fourth District Court in Cassopolis on charges of delivery and manufacture of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a felon, felony firearms, marijuana possession and domestic violence.
Nicken was being held Thursday on a $30,000 cash or surety bond.
Police were assisted at the scene by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
This matter remains under investigation.
