The Cassopolis football team got its first victory under the leadership of new head coach Dan Purlee by beating LaPorte LaLumiere 47-7 Friday.

The Rangers (1-2) used a devastating and demoralizing run game to establish their presence against the Lakers (1-2).

A feat that was made all the more impressive due to the fact that their two-year starter at running back (Evan Brown) didn’t play in the game.

The Rangers racked up 390 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Senior Jaylin Lawson did the most damage for the Rangers, carrying the ball 24 times en route to 190 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Trevon Brown added 80 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

The Cassopolis defense also came to play in a big way.

Lumiere was held to just 30 yards offensively in the first half and ended the game with 161 yards total. The Lakers gained 33 yards on the ground and 128 through the air.

Purlee was ecstatic to get that first victory under his belt.

“It feels good. It’s a great feeling. Hopefully we can keep the ball rolling and get some more,” he said.

All of Cassopolis’ offense came via the ground game. The Rangers attempted just two passes.

Lumiere quarterback Mickey Macius was 8-for-31 for 128 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Laker wide receiver Jo’vante Peals had five grabs, 113 yards and one touchdown.

Cassopolis will return to the field Friday when it takes on visiting Bronson at 7 p.m.
