Two arrested after police pursuit

Two Berrien Springs men have been charged with drug crimes following a police chase Monday in Niles Township.
According to Niles police, officers were conducting an undercover narcotics investigation to purchase crack cocaine from Norfleet Powers. A traffic stop of a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Powers was conducted on Bond Street near U.S. Highway 12 by Niles police and Michigan State Police troopers.
Powers fled the scene in his vehicle and was pursued by police for about two miles. In his attempts to escape, Powers damaged several yards, fences, trees and mailboxes. He crashed the car in the backyard of a residence in the 200 block of Marc Street in Niles Township.
Powers and Keith Matthews, a passenger in the car, then fled on foot south through yards for about a quarter-mile.
The suspects were arrested by officers in the 200 block of Green Gables after located under a swimming pool deck.
Powers was arraigned at the Fifth District Courthouse in Niles Tuesday on charges of delivery of cocaine second offense, fleeing from police and resisting arrest. His bond was set at $50,000 cash surety/tether.
Matthews was arraigned in Niles Tuesday on charges of delivery of cocaine second offense and resisting arrest. His bond was set at $10,000 cash surety/tether.
Both men are lodged at the Berrien County Jail.
