Alexander F. “Al” Federowski, 94, of Cassopolis, passed to his rest Monday, April 9, 2012, at Cass County Medical Care Facility after an illness.
He was born Nov. 1, 1917, in Chicago to the late Josef and Mary (Gyzbowska) Federowski.
Al was the former owner of the service station just east of Vandalia, and a fuel oil delivery service in connection with the service station. He was an avid supporter of the Barn Swallow Theatre. At this time, he and his wife were living on Donnell Lake.
Al liked to visit with friends and make new friends. He enjoyed doing community activities and helping others. Al had been a member of the school board of Vandalia, and one of his prime objectives was to see his children receive a good education. Al served in the United States Navy, doing two tours of duty. He served in Alaska and the Asiatic-Pacific area; Seattle; San Diego; and the Massachusetts area.
He was married June 2, 1956, at Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Wallace Moore to Marjorie Jane Silver, who survives. Marge was a former Cass County librarian and county commissioner.
Other survivors are their children, Mary Alice (Arthur) Sagebiel of Hico, Texas, Dora Lucas of Cassopolis, Rachal (Col. Charles) Wilson of The Prague, Czechoslovakia, Alex 2nd (Barbara) Federowski of Burlington, Texas, and Daniel (Lu Anne) Federowski of North Port, Fla. There are six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. There are two sisters, Florence Drewenski of Tinley Park, Ill., and Esther Bartels of Vandalia.
One daughter, Ruth Ann, passed away in 1959. Other family members who have passed were his siblings, Estelle Erichsen, Charlotte Czyz, Jean Budzowski and Edward Federowski.
There will be a memorial service in early summer at Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home at a date and time to be announced. Burial will then follow at Edwardsburg Cemetery with the U.S. Navy Honor Guard conducting military rites.
