CASSOPOLIS — A Niles woman is headed to jail for possession of cocaine.
Kathleen Thornton, 49, was sentenced to 120 days in jail Friday in Cass County Circuit Court. She will receive credit for 44 days already served.
Prosecutor Victor Fitz said Thornton has 12 criminal convictions on her record, mostly in the Kalamazoo area.
“She has started to bring it down to the Niles area,” Fitz said. “But if she chooses to remain in that lifestyle, in Cass County this prosecutor’s office will do its utmost to keep her incarcerated. We’ve got her name.”
Thornton was on probation for a drunken driving offense in LaGrange County, Ind. at the time of the offense.
Also sentenced for drug activity Friday was Amy Beezley, a 35-year-old Benton Harbor resident.
Beezley was sentenced to two years of probation and with a 120-day suspended jail term for possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.
Prosecutor Victor Fitz said she was fortunate not to be hit with a felony firearm charge as well, since there were guns on the premises of the drug house. Judge Michael Dodge said Beezley was also “on the cusp” of being charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, which is a 20-year felony.
Beezley’s three children were also living in the Dowagiac home where the drug activity was taking place.
She has lost custody of them and they are in foster care.
