CASSOPOLIS — The annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection will take place at the Cass County Fairgrounds on O’Keefe Street from 9 a.m. to noon May 19.
This event is held each spring and allows county residents to dispose of hazardous products by bringing them to one central location where they can be properly packaged and disposed.
Disposal costs are free for the first 300 pounds of products — an amount that should cover most households; cost over 300 pounds will be $1.50 per pound.
The average volume per participant has been about 80 to 90 pounds.
In addition to HHW, used tires and electronic waste also is being collected.
This e-waste was added to the collection based on consumer input that suggested it was difficult to properly dispose of these products.  Like HHW, electronic waste is free.
There will also be a used eyeglasses collection and an old flag collection. Flags will be disposed of properly with a ceremony by the VFW.
Tires are collected for a fee: passenger tires at $2 each ($4 with rims), truck tires at $6 each ($8 with rims) and tractor tires at $20 each ($25 with rims).
Collections will be accepted from 9a.m. to noon on the 19th, no reservation necessary. For any questions or a complete list of acceptable waste items, contact the MSU Extension office at (269) 445-4438.
