Melvin L. “Mick” Ferrier, Sr., 76, of Dowagiac, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, in Bronson Memorial Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Mick was born Sept. 7, 1935, in Dowagiac to the late Eugene and Hazel (Lillie) Ferrier. Mick and Dorothy (Hotrum) Ferrier enjoyed 51 years of marriage; she survives.
To this union were born two sons, Melvin “Lee” (Cindy) Ferrier, Jr. of Prudenville, and Gregory Ferrier of Dowagiac. The joy of his life was his five grandchildren, Casey (Becky) Ferrier of Phoenixville, Pa., Jennifer Ferrier of Saginaw, Tiffany (Havian) Belmontes of Eau Claire, Sgt. Scott (Sarah) Ferrier of Fayetteville, N.C., where Scott is serving our country in the U.S. Army 82nd Air Borne Division, and Zachary Ferrier of Dowagiac; two great-grandchildren, Annaleeh and Julian, children of Tiffany and Havian Belmontes; one sister, Barbara Zinn of Union; four brothers, Eugene Ferrier, Jr., Auburn, Calif., William Ferrier and Victor Ferrier, both of Florida, Raymond (Carol) Ferrier of Dowagiac; several nieces and nephews; and his, friend Connie Risser.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Cherry Ferrier; and seven brothers, Daniel Ferrier, Donald Ferrier, Larry Ferrier, Carl Ferrier, Tommy Ferrier, Jimmy Ferrier and Jerry Ferrier.
Mick served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a bricklayer for more than 30 years with Bricklayers Union Local 4 of Indiana/Kentucky, working mainly in the South Bend and Mishawaka, Ind., areas. His favorite thing to do after his retirement was golfing and having coffee with the gang at McDonald’s. There are very few people who enjoyed Dowagiac Chieftains football more than Mick did, rarely missing a game.
Family and friends gathered Friday, March 2, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Connelly Chapel Wagner Family Funerals, 202 N. Broadway St., Cassopolis. The funeral service was Saturday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Bible Church, 27032 Marcellus Highway, Dowagiac, with Pastor Robert Vickroy officiating. Mr. Ferrier was laid to rest in his native Dowagiac in Riverside Cemetery.
