Angela Mazzotta, 89, of Niles, died at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, with her family by her side, following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Filadelfia, Italy, to Giuseppe and Giovanna (Serratore) Serratore. As a young lady, she enjoyed dancing. She also enjoyed cooking and gardening all of her life; making the best Italian bread; and “farming” a large garden at home. Caring for her family was her greatest joy.
On March 29, 1942, in Filadelfia, she married Vincenzo “Vince” Mazzotta, with whom she celebrated 51 years of marriage prior to his death on Dec. 20, 1993.
Angela is survived by their children, Barbara (John Batson) Siderits, of Niles, Joann (Robert) Daus, of Niles, Anna Hanlon, of Niles, and Fedele “Philip” (Karol) Mazzotta of Niles; grandchildren, Ryan (Annie) Daus, Kevin (Caity Hood) Daus, David Hanlon, Erica (Christien) Jourbert, Aren (Ashley) Cooper and Todd Batson; great-grandchildren, Harper Belle Daus, Cody Hafer, Jessa Joubert, Connor Cooper, Lawson Cooper and Zachary Batson; brother, Giovandomenico (Barbara) Serratore of Norwood, Mass.; sister, Maria (Thomas) Serratore of Norwood, Mass; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Fedele “Philip” Mazzotta; sister, Giovanna Serratore; brother, Antonio Serratore; and son-in-laws, Bill Siderits, Paul Hanlon and Don Laymon.
Angela’s family remembers her as a warm and loving mother who was very proud of her family.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Angela Mazzotta will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at St. Mark Catholic Church (due to construction at St. Mary’s) in Niles by the Rev. David Otto of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Niles, with the Rev. William T. Melody of Notre Dame, Ind., concelebrating.
Committal rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Niles.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles with the recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 p.m.
