Barbara Ann Makepeace, 74, of George Street in Niles, died at 9:46 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Lakeland Community Hospital following an extended illness.

She was born Dec. 5, 1937, in Muskegon, Mich., to Claude and Lorraine (Hughes) Hicks.

After her mother’s death, she was raised by her father and stepmother, Bernice Hicks.

Barbara was both employed as the office manager and was also a lifetime member of the Indiana Paint Horse Club and lived in the area all her life.

She was married to Albert Pierce; he preceded her in death in 1982. She was then married to LaVerne H. Makepeace in 1989; he preceded her in death in 2002.

She was also preceded in death by her father, mother and stepmother.

Survivors include her sons, Michael Pierce of Niles and Matt Pierce of South Bend; daughter, Marjorie (Bob) Tavernier of South Bend; grandsons, Kyle and Connor; and brother, Jim (Joy Beth) Hicks of Remus, Mich.

Funeral services will be private.

Contributions in memory of Barbara may be made to the local Humane Society or animal organization of choice.
