Herbert G. Burden, 87, of Maple City, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Maple Valley Nursing Home.
Herb was born on Jan. 1, 1925, in Lake Worth, Fla., the son of Clinton and Flossie (Devane) Burden.
In 1967 in West Palm Beach, he married Jacqueline Hale, who survives.
Born and raised in Lake Worth, Herb served in the Marine Corps, Azore Islands, and then acquired a bachelor of science degree and a master degree in education.
He was a teacher and principal in Palm Beach County and Michigan.
“The Garnet Society” formed in 1998 to honor Principal Herb Burden for his pioneer FM radio station WHRS, established in 1967 with a federal grant, to provide Spanish-speaking migrant families education outreach.
The Garnet Society thrives today as a prestigious philanthropic educational outreach for PBS WXEL FM and TV in Palm Beach County.
In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by: his children, Phyllis (Bob) Miller of Georgia, Bruce Burden of Texas, Christopher (Amber) Burden of Hart, David Burden of Dowagiac, a twin sister Helen Douglas of Tavernier, Fla., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his twin older brothers, Willard and Wilbur.
Private family services will be at a later date.
The family is being served by Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
