Elsie E. Piechowiak, 90, of South Bend, passed away Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at Sanctuary at Holy Cross.

Elsie was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Mishawaka, Ind., to the late Basiel and Elodie (VanWaeyenberghe) DeVolder. On May 17, 1947 in South Bend, Elsie DeVolder married John Piechowiak, who passed away Dec. 22, 1998.

Elsie had worked for the USO during World War II, Ball Band, Wilson Brothers and at the J.M.S. building as an elevator operator. She was a Blue Bird leader, a volunteer for Real Services Nutrition program and worked on the Riverwalk committee for the Northwest Neighborhood Association. She was a great mom, grandma, great-grandma and sister who everyone loved, and was respectful to all she knew. A special thanks to Dr. Raman Mitra and Dr. Michael Strzelecki, for all their care and kindness over the years.

Elsie was also preceded in death by her brothers, Cyriel and Raymond DeVolder; son-in-law, Rudy; and brother-in-law, Joseph Slade.

Elsie is survived by her daughter, Beverly Skopec, of Niles; grandson, John Skopec, of Niles; great-grandson, Jonathan Skopec; sister, Alice Slade, of Indianapolis; special niece, Mary Slade of Indianapolis; and several loving nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

There will no visitation or services. Cremation will be held at Welsheimer Crematory. In Elsie’s memory, contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association, 208 S.
