Quick start leads ‘Cats to win

It has been a tough week for the Bangor Vikings.
Top-ranked Brandywine didn’t make it any better Saturday night as it defeated the Vikings 59-33 to improve to 11-0 on the season.
Bangor lost for the third time this week. On top of that, two players have had family members die this week. One of those players still competed against the Bobcats. The Vikings are also without second- leading scorer Sami Bry, who is out with mono.
Bangor (7-3) looked like a team that was struggling for the first quarter and a half. The Vikings, after scoring the opening basket, gave up 17 unanswered points to Brandywine. The game was never in doubt after that.
Bangor was just 3-of-12 in the opening quarter and found itself down 23-6 to the Bobcats after one. The Vikings also turned the ball over 10 times in the opening eight minutes.
“Against a team like that, you have to be 100 percent who you are before you get on the bus,” Bangor coach Danell Smith said. “We practiced against it, but with only eight players this week, you can’t simulate that kind of speed in practice. There seem like there were six of them on the floor. They’re aggressive. They’re physical and those are the things we have trouble with eight or nine girls simulating in practice.”
The Vikings played a lot better at the offensive end in the second quarter, hitting 6-of-14 shots from the field, but still were unable to match the Bobcats on the scoreboard.
Behind a six-point quarter by Mackenzie Shelton, Brandywine was able to put up 16 more points and led 39-18 at the intermission.
“For not playing for 12 days, I thought we did a real good job of coming out and not being flat tonight,” Brandywine coach Josh Hood said. “We played fast. We played hard.”
Hood was able to work his reserves in early and often against the Vikings, and, in the first half, they played well.
“I think the biggest difference tonight and the reason I was happy at halftime was the three girls that came off the bench — Mikayla Kemp, Victoria Knight and Tia Hullinger — played great. They played great defense and they hustled. They brought energy off the bench when we brought subs in tonight.”
Despite playing much better, the third quarter was unkind to Bangor as the Vikings were limited to just three points.
That allowed the Bobcats to turn the game into a rout as they got seven points from Madison Pellow inside and built a 52-21 lead heading into the final quarter.
Bangor was able to outscore the Bobcats in the final eight minutes, but really didn’t put much of a dent in the Brandywine advantage.
Pellow led the Bobcats and all scorers with 15 points. She also got seven rebounds. Carlie Newman, who was hot early, finished with 14 points and five steals.
Shelton added nine points and seven assists, while Rachael Ort, who hit two 3-pointers in the opening quarter also finished with nine points.
Brooke Smith grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Bobcats.
Monique Johnson had 14 points for Bangor. Megan Everett and Alicia Oviedo each had six points.
Brandywine now faces the toughest stretch of its season with games at Mendon tonight, at Cassopolis on Thursday and at St. Joseph Jan. 30.
