Postmaster: write letters

The birthday of the first postmaster general, Benjamin Franklin, is Tuesday, and the Cassopolis Post Office will also be promoting a letter-writing campaign that day.
The campaign is the result of an idea from a postal carrier, Dave Randall of East Lansing, who has had a love for, and been a supporter of, the handwritten letter. He said, “Seeing someone’s actual handwriting is like seeing their face. Letters are a precious heirloom.”
His idea has been embraced by one of the local schools along his route so much that the school principal passed it along to the postmaster general for his support, declaring Jan. 17, 2012, as “National Letter Writing Day.”
“Promoting letter-writing not only supports the Postal Service, it demonstrates the power of ‘the Mail’ and the impact and important of the Postal Service on all communities,” Cassopolis Postmaster Sharon Vliek said. “Letter-writing encourages communication, community outreach and reminds us that there is nothing like a handwritten letter.”
