Ivo ‘Murphy’ Rafferty

CASSOPOLIS – Ivo “Murphy” Rafferty, 76, of Cassopolis, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo.

He was born May 16, 1935, in Mishawaka, Ind., to Ernest and Margaret (Stoops) Rafferty.

He married his Diamond Lake sweetheart, Jannette Karnafel, on July 4, 1962, in South Bend, Ind.

Murphy was a cross country runner at Mishawka High School when they took several state championships.

He purchased his Diamond Lake home at 18 years of age. He was an avid boater and water sportsman and enjoyed his boat, “Restless.”

He served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a loss prevention specialist with Grain Dealers Mutual Insurance Co., Indianapolis, at Roy H. Liskey Inc. as an independent insurance agent, St. Joseph, and S & R Jewelers, Cassopolis as a courier.

He owned and operated two Shell gas stations, one in Mishawaka and one in Osceola, Ind.

Murphy is survived by: his wife, Jannette Rafferty of Cassopolis; two daughters,

Kimberly (Duane) Felton of St. Joseph and Karly (John Jr.) Hayman, Cassopolis; four grandchildren, Darrien Hayman and John Hayman III and Samuel Felton and Charles Felton; two sisters, Ardith Eby of Osceola and Naomi Casasanta of Lafayette, Ind.; and one brother, Florn (Marietta) Rafferty of Rensselaer, Ind.

Family and friends will gather on Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Connelly Chapel, Wagner Family Funerals, 202 N. Broadway, Cassopolis, with rosary at 4:30 p.m.

A brief prayer service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday, Jan. 11, before the funeral mass at 11 a.m. at S. Ann Catholic Church, 313 N. Broadway, Cassopolis.

Interment will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Cassopolis with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the combined honor guards of William E. Lozier VFW Post 10704 and Efton James American Legion Post 206, Cassopolis.
