The Courtyard Gallery is featuring birdhouses handcrafted by an artist in Grand Beach.

Frank Schmidt, a cabinet and furniture maker for more than 50 years, started his career as an industrial arts teacher at a high school on Long Island, N.Y., before becoming a high school administrator.

Currently, Schmidt is retired and volunteers his time teaching woodworking at a school for the deaf and blind in St. Augustine, Fla.

He has lived in the New Buffalo area since 2002, where he creates these birdhouses that can be used inside or outside.

The Courtyard Gallery is located at 813 E. Buffalo St. (U.S. 12), New Buffalo.

Business hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, Tuesday by appointment and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
