“Flow,” an exhibition of paintings, prints and photographs that span the 20th century, explores the meanings of water.
The opening reception is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Krasl Art Center in downtown St. Joseph.
Tabor Hill wine along with food from Panera and 165 Catering will be served, and students from the Children’s Academy will perform piano music in the galleries.
Additionally, an art workshop will be provided in the KAC studio classrooms, providing children with an art-making experience while caretakers enjoy the reception (free for members, $10 per non-member family).
“Flow,” sponsored by Third Coast Surf Shop, takes as its theme an element at once commonplace, yet crucial to human existence.
Like its physical character, water as subject has assumed a variety of roles and meanings, from being a source of life to an instrument of destruction and death.
Organized into three broad themes of “Water as Power,” “Water as Life Source” and “Water as Environmental Concern,” “Flow” explores the many meanings associated with water through a selection of 29 works drawn from the collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The works reflect various approaches to imaging water in art, from traditional landscape to abstraction, as well as diverse viewpoints of this indispensable resource.
Spanning more than a century, these works represent a variety of media, including oils, watercolors, photographs and prints.  Among the artists represented are William Theophilus Brown, Harry Callahan, Joel Meyerowitz, Robert Morris, Wayne Thiebaud and Neil Welliver.
“Flow,” which continues through Jan. 7, is organized by Sharon L. Kennedy, a curator at the Sheldon Museum of Art, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The exhibition is toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance.
