Plainwell nips Eddies

EDWARDSBURG — Totaling 532 yards is usually enough offense to win a football game.
But that wasn’t the case Friday for Edwardsburg in its Division 4 opening round district playoff game against Plainwell.
The Eddies made costly mistakes and their defense had no answers for the Trojans’ offense as Plainwell upset No. 9-ranked Edwardsburg, 57-48.
Plainwell, which never attempted a pass, rushed for 506 yards and punted only once.
“(Plainwell) beat us up front,” said Eddies coach Kevin Bartz, whose team finishes at 8-1.
Edwardsburg pulled within 54-46 with 8:48 left in the game after getting a 40-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Zimmerman to Tyler Hack and a two-point conversion run from Zimmerman.
Plainwell then responded with the biggest drive of the game. The Trojans drove 46 yards on seven plays with Austin Lutz converting on a 29-yard field goal to give Plainwell a 57-46 lead with 4:12 left in the game.
With 1:46 remaining, Edwardsburg was stopped on downs after driving to Plainwell’s three yard line.
The final scoring in the game came after Plainwell’s punter took a safety in the end zone with :15.3 left.
“I think I’m 10 years old than I was three hours ago,” said Plainwell coach Darren Conklin, whose team takes a 7-3 record into next week’s district final. “I’m proud of our effort. (Edwardsburg) is a tough team. Every time we got a little wiggle room they came right back. You look at the scoreboard and that was a classic. It was just a fun game to be a part of.”
Plainwell built a 35-16 halftime lead after moving the ball successfully and taking advantage of Edwardsburg mistakes. The Trojans rushed for 251 yards in the first half with C.J. Hillstead’s 69-yard scamper giving Plainwell the lead for good at 14-9 with 4:14 left in the first quarter. Hillstead finished with 154 yards on the ground on 17 carries with two touchdowns.
In the first half, Plainwell turned three Edwardsburg turnovers and a misplay by Edwardsburg on a kickoff, which turned into an onside kick, into 28 points.
“We started out that first half and played about as poorly as you can play,” Bartz said. “I thought we gathered some things at halftime and came back offensively and moved the ball. But I don’t know if we ever stopped them. On third down and long we let the quarterback scramble and we’d overpursue. We couldn’t get a break defensively and get two scores in a row.”
Plainwell quarterback Grant Pell rushed for 240 yards on 13 carries with four touchdowns. Pell had touchdown runs of 57, 33 and 62 yards in the second half.
Edwardsburg also got great play out of its starting quarterback as Ethan Zimmerman rushed for 102 yards on 10 carries and completed 4-of-8 passes for 94 yards with a touchdown.
The Eddies rushed for 438 yards with Adam Kendall rushing for 123 yards on 14 carries and David Kiefer rushing for 123 yards on six carries. Kendall had an 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, which pulled the Eddies with 35-23 with 9:34 left in the third. Kiefer had touchdown runs of 32 and 49 yards. The 49-yarder cut Plainwell’s lead to 48-38 with 1:15 left in the third quarter. Edwardsburg also got 73 yards rushing on nine carries from Lee Williamson. Williamson’s 45-yard touchdown run in the first quarter tied the game at 7.
A few seconds after Williamson’s score, Edwardsburg took its lone lead of the game at 9-7 when Plainwell’s kickoff returner took the ball at the 4-yard line and went backwards into the end zone and took a knee, which turned into two points for the Eddies.
“It’s a great group of seniors,” Bartz said about summing up the season. “These are the same kids from last year that won a regional title and went 8-0 this year. Those kids have done a tremendous job on the varsity the last two years. It’s hard for them to leave after playing as poorly as they did. They’re disappointed in their performance. It’s not how they wanted to leave the program. I feel for bad them. They played with a lot of heart and put in a lot of time and effort. I hate to see it end like this for them.”
