Niles freshmen go undefeated

PORTAGE — The Niles freshmen football team capped off an undefeated season Thursday night with a 42-0 victory over host Portage Central.
The Vikings have had an outstanding 2011 season, outscoring its opponents 319-27 to finish with a 9-0 mark.
Thursday night, Niles roared out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, which it upped to 22-0 by the end of the opening 12 minutes.
The Vikings scored a pair of touchdowns in the second to open up a 34-0 halftime advantage.
Jordon Ham and Alvin Kyles spearheaded the offensive surge as they scored four touchdowns.
On defense, Niles RaQuon Glenn with an interception for a touchdown. Other big defensive plays were made by Carter Rouch and Logan Leonard-Ortiz.
JV football
The Niles JV football team ended its season on a high note Thursday night with a 16-8 win over host Portage Central.
The Vikings finish their campaign at 3-4-2.
Darek Bulluck-Mills rushed for 93 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns, as well as a 2-point conversion. Michael Farmer added 65 yards on 10 carries and Dominic Ledesma 38 yards on 11 totes with a 2-point conversion.
Defensively, the Vikings were led by David Kennedy with 13 tackles. Kale Pollard, Jason Taylor, Farmer and Austin Weber all had seven tackles. Taylor also had a fumble recovery.
Eri Villegas had five tackles and a forced fumble, while Sean Craig added an interception.
“Tonight was Viking weather and our Niles Vikings played tough,” coach Josh Bourne said. “As quirky and interesting as this team has been all season, the one thing that we have always said and complimented them on was that they are tough and that they fight.
“Our offensive line is a group that got thrown together this year with many different players of all ages. We have been very critical of them all season and, frankly, the fact that they have not worked alongside one another for multiple years there were many trust issues that effected our ability to move the football. That was not the case tonight. Our offensive line was the key to the game.”
Bourne was also pleased with the defensive effort.
“Tonight, in our final game, the defense brought it the way they had early and often this year,” he said.
