County handles 80,000 pounds of waste

BERRIEN COUNTY — In 2011, Berrien County residents recycled and properly disposed of more than 80,000 pounds of household hazardous waste through the county’s collection events. Collections will start again in April. In the meantime, Berrien County
residents can recycle and properly dispose of home hazards for free at the
Kalamazoo County Household Hazardous Waste Center, 1301 Lamont Ave. in Kalamazoo.
Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Tuesday and Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. Hours may differ around holidays.
Accepted items include household generated hazardous waste such as most
paint products (not latex paint), automobile liquids, fuels, mercury,
batteries, pesticides, cleaners, pool chemicals, fluorescent lights,
adhesives and photographic chemicals.
Berrien County residents must bring identification to include the address
from which the household hazardous waste was generated. This ID could
include a driver’s license; or other personal ID along with a home utility
bill with the home’s address on it.
